Best Airline Companies To Watch For 2014

As Juanita Centanni boarded a recent Cayman Airways flight from Tampa to Grand Cayman, she braced herself for an awful travel experience.

She remembered what happened to her on a domestic flight not so long ago, when she was recovering from rotator cuff surgery. Centanni, a retired government employee, wondered if one of the flight attendants could help with her carry-on bag.

"Ask one of the passengers," the airline employee snapped.

So when a Cayman Airways attendant met her at the door without any prompting, offering to carry her luggage and stow it in the overhead compartment, she couldn't believe it.

"I was amazed," she says.

That sense of disbelief is spreading among air travelers as 2013 winds down. Could it be that airline employees are rediscovering the lost art of customer service? Or perhaps just relearning the good manners their mothers taught them? There's evidence that the answer is yes.

At one time, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) and its upstart peers wouldn't fly long-haul routes because it was either too difficult or unprofitable to do so. But now Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) is building the extended range 737 MAX while Airbus has the A320neo. Think of them as smaller-scale versions of the 787, says Motley Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video.

Even though Old Guards[ Southwest Airlines (LUV)] and [JetBlue Airways (JBLU)] have shown momentum in recent RASM trends, SAVE’s RASM strength underscores that there are few scenarios where the New Guard will not perform at least as well as the Old Guard and many scenarios where they will outperform, consistent with our view. In fact, the New Guard continue to benefit from the following vis--vis other low-cost carriers: (A) Structural cost advantages, (B) Innovative ancillary revenue strategies, (B) Profitable ASM growth in excess of peers due to their small size and ability to stimulate demand through price, and (C) Relatively attractive valuation considering the companiesgrowth profiles.

While we suspect some investors may be cautious following the strong performance of airline stocks over the past 124 months, we believe there is significant runway remaining. It is important to note that despite the major consolidations that have been announced over the past five years, only one merger Delta-Northwest has been fully implemented, while remaining combinations Southwest (LUV)-AirTran, United-Continental, and U.S. Airways-American Airlines (AAL) are in various stages of achieving synergies. We expect the primary benefits of consolidation to be: (1) a more favorable pricing environment, (2) reduced risk of irrational pricing, and (3) an improved ability to use ancillary revenues to affect passenger fares and further mitigate fuel cost risk.

Matt York/AP The U.S. Department of Justice, which is fighting a proposed merger of US Airways Group and American Airlines parent AMR Corp., asked a judge Tuesday to postpone a trial in the case, saying the federal government shutdown would prevent its staff from working. But a lawyer for the airlines said he expected the trial to determine if the government can stop the merger of US Airways and American Airlines to begin as scheduled in late November. "From what the judge said in there, and I think everybody heard, we're going to trial on Nov. 25," Richard Parker said after a pretrial hearing. "We are planning on a Nov. 25 trial date." Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly didn't mention a potential stay during the pretrial hearing Tuesday. Shares of US Airways (LCC) were up 3.5 percent at $19.63 in midday trading Tuesday, while AMR (AAMRQ) rose 9.5 percent to $4.50. The Justice Department had asked for the stay because of a government-wide shutdown that started Tuesday. "This is creating difficulties for the Department to perform the functions necessary to support its litigation efforts," the department said in a court filing. The Justice Department and several states sued Aug. 13 to stop the merger, saying the deal to create the world's biggest carrier would lead to higher fares and stifle competition. Parker said a settlement resolving the fight was still possible. "We are interested in a reasonable settlement in this case," he said. Any settlement would mean asset sales, which in turn would require approval from the judge overseeing American's emergence from bankruptcy. The airlines have defended the deal in court filings, saying it would create $500 million in savings to consumers annually by creating a stronger competitor to Delta Air Lines Inc and United Continental Holdings Inc. But the Justice Department has said the merger would be bad for consumers. Its complaint focused on Reagan National Airport, outside Washington, where the two carriers contr

Getty Images WASHINGTON -- As one part of the U.S. government looks to remove restrictions on making phone calls from airplanes, another agency is apparently considering its own prohibition. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Thomas Wheeler told members of Congress that while his agency sees no technical reason to ban calls on planes, Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told him Thursday morning that the DOT will be moving forward with its own restrictions. Wheeler called his proposal to rescind the ban "the responsible thing to do." Calls have been prohibited for 22 years over fears that they would interfere with cellular networks on the ground. Technological advances had resolved those concerns. "When the rationale for a rule doesn't exist, the rule shouldn't exist," Wheeler told members of the House Communications and Technology Subcommittee during his 39th day in office. Wheeler said he has called the chief executives of major airlines, telling them that the government isn't requiring them to allow calls. Ultimately, the decision will rest with individual airlines. "I understand the consternation caused by the thought of your onboard seatmate disturbing the flight making phone calls. I do not want the person in the seat next to me yapping at 35,000 feet any more than anyone else," Wheeler said. "But we are not the Federal Courtesy Commission." The DOT, which includes the Federal Aviation Administration, wasn't immediately available for comment. The FCC proposal comes just weeks after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted its ban on using personal electronic devices such as iPads and Kindles below 10,000 feet, saying they don't interfere with cockpit instruments. An Associated Press-GfK poll released Wednesday found that 48 percent of Americans oppose allowing cellphones to be used for voice calls while flying; just 19 percent support it. Another 30 percent are neutral. Among those who fly, opposition is stronger. Loo

The Argument For $75 Oil Should Be $95 Oil

The oil industry may feel picked on by Barron’s of late. Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) were not exactly given the biggest welcome mat in a piece about Kinder Morgan, Inc. (NYSE: KMI). Now Barron’s has its weekend cover story being about how oil will fall to $75 from $100. While anything can happen in trading levels in the markets on a daily or weekly level, this just doesn’t jive with the economics and forecasts.

The Barron’s shift to $75 oil is really subtitled “Bad News For Putin,” and it is based upon plentiful new oil finds and more efficient production methods. The report contends that this will all be a boost for the U.S. economy, but this is bad news for Russia as it needs oil at $100 to pay its bills.

24/7 Wall St. is not really targeting the Barron’s article per say here, but we have focused recently around $100 oil being the new norm that prices either rise from or fall from. The reality is that this $100 level may really be $95 or somewhere around there, but it is likely a far cry from $75.

Production costs have been much higher than a decade ago, and many oil companies simply will mothball many oil fields at $75 per barrel. Those ultradeep water wells and many of the tight shale formations on land just won’t work at $75 per barrel. Another issue is that the global economy has been and remains weaker than what everyone was hoping for a year ago. Oil was around $101 at the end of the week. Over the last two years, oil only managed to get under $85 once for a very brief time (see chart below).

Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) CEO John Watson recently told a Houston audience that crude oil running $100 per barrel is becoming the new standard in the oil and gas industry — and that consumers will pay more than they used to. Merrill Lynch just recently upgraded shares of BP PLC (NYSE: BP) and Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) with Buy ratings. They were targeting close to 20% expected total returns in their calls, when you include dividends. These two Buy ratings would almost certainly not be in place if they thought oil would go to $75 and stay there.

One thing to consider here on a broad macroeconomic basis is that the $101 price of today is when China remains weak, Brazil is growing at what feels like a snail’s pace, India remains weak, turmoil in the Middle East is at somewhat normalized levels, and Europe remains weak.

Top Warren Buffett Companies To Buy Right Now

Over the last 12 years or so, one estimate was that production costs rose fourfold — while production rose only 11%. Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (NYSE: RDS-A) have all announced significant reductions in capital spending over the next several years. They are simply trying to bring spending in line with revenues. That could change if demand climbs again.

One wild card be if crude oil exports become legal. This could create yet another black gold rush, which could last for several years. Our own Paul Ausick recently wrote,

“U.S. oil producers argue that removing the ban on oil exports will help them to recover their rising costs because they can charge more for the crude. That will be true for two or maybe three years, but again crude prices will settle around a level where demand and supply once more become roughly equivalent.”

In some cases, oil is no different than the plunging price of gold. Gold miners will simply idle production at its more costly operations and focus on lower cost production that is easier to get to. This can drop supply drastically, which can stabilize the price or make it rise again. Oil producers will simply give up on more expensive oil production projects.

Our take is that for $75 oil as a benchmark to happen, the global economy has to tip backward into even slower growth (or worse) AND that a change to natural gas engines for the US truck fleet has to occur. T. Boone Pickens has been a huge proponent for this effort, and it is one reason we pointed out earlier in the year that Westport Innovations Inc. (NASDAQ: WPRT) could actually double again. Until better hope of a natural gas trucking fleet is possible, this remains a long shot. Barron’s contends that internal combustion engines can now be run efficiently on alternative fuels (including gas).

The rise of electric cars is another consideration, but this effort is still running very slow. Total U.S. sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles was up more than 80% in 2013, but this was still not quite 100,000 units. Total US car sales rose by about 8% to 15.6 million units in 2013.  What is interesting is that Barron’s, also in this weekend’s print edition, said that Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is too ambitious in its Gigafactory ambitions for lithium electric battery ambitions. Tesla’s Gigafactory ambition is to be able to produce enough for 500,000 units a year – by 2020.

And what about oil sands in Canada contributing to the oil supply? These projects are feasible at $100, but, at $75, many projects will simply be money-losers. Can the Keystone Pipeline make a difference? Sure, if it ever happens.

The case for alternative energy and renewable energy is growing handily here each day. This might not drive those small-cap stocks 10,000% higher, but it builds a base for the ones with a proven model. The argument for renewables and alternative energy might not just be for the sake of carbon emissions either. If oil prices remain high or rise, alternative energy projects will simply be driven more and more by economics. First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) just announced new record-breaking efficiency, which drives down the cost.

So, is $100 the new benchmark in oil? Maybe not, but $95 may be. If that is not the norm, then $90 is likely the new benchmark that prices will rise or fall from. The chart provided here by Ino looks like $95 has been the real pivot over the last two years. Prior to that, we had that nasty recession and recovery that sent prices much lower, but even before that we had the oil boom of 2007 to 2008 that sent prices to Pluto.

All things considered – and admittedly glossed over quickly – $75 as the new trading average for oil that Barron’s pointed out should be closer to $95.

The best stocks offer sustainable market-beating gains, with robust and improving financial metrics that support strong price growth. Does ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) fit the bill? Let's look at what its recent results tell us about its po! tential for future gains.

    Why Corning?
The company is a giant in specialty glasses and fiber optics. Its fortunes are influenced these days by smartphone and tablet makers such as Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , which use its glass in their displays. Corning's Gorilla Glass is so strong that it has put a crimp in the business of screen-protecting companies such as ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) . Some worry about Apple's interest in sapphire, though, as it's even stronger than Gorilla Glass (though more expensive) and could threaten Corning.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

    Thursday

The maker of protective screens, keyboard covers, and other mobile-gadget accessories has fallen hard after hosing down its outlook twice over the past three months.

How to Know if You Are Diversified?

In this edition of The Motley Fool's "Ask a Fool" series, Motley Fool analysts Jason Moser and Brendan Mathews take a question from a reader who asks, "How can we truly know if we are diversified?"

Jason and Brendan both see diversity as a somewhat subjective measure as it depends on where the investor is in his or her investing life, along with the person's tolerance for risk. Investors who are trying to grow their wealth, for example, may want more exposure to stocks. One of the simplest vehicles for diversity in this case can be an index fund pegged to the S&P 500 which will give an investor outstanding diversity with low costs. Investors who are closer to retirement, though, are more focused on protecting their wealth; they will want to add more fixed-income investments into their portfolio to minimize risk while still aiming for a reasonable rate of return. Either way, diversity is in the eye of the beholder and will require some self-examination in any situation.

So what's the best investing strategy?
It's no secret that investors tend to be impatient with the market, but the best investment strategy is to buy shares in solid businesses and keep them for the long term. In the special free report "3 Stocks That Will Help You Retire Rich," The Motley Fool shares investment ideas and strategies that could help you build wealth for years to come. AdviceIQ: Millennials' credit scores

Your credit score ranks as one of the most important numbers in your young adult life. Here's what to know as you build one.

This three-digit number acts as your financial report card, representing your creditworthiness and an indication to potential lenders of the likelihood that you pay debts on time. If you're a millennial, born in the 1980s and early 1990s, you must start building this indispensable tool of financial adulthood.

Your score, managed wisely, brings you peace of mind and helps put dollars in your pocket via low interest rates and higher credit limits. Managed improperly, your credit score can delay your ability to reach financial goals and result in you spending more to make up for mistakes.

Most lenders rely on reports like those from the Fair Isaac Corp. (FICO). Five elements make up your FICO score:

• 35% depends on how you pay bills – on time or often late or delinquent
• 30% on the amount you owe and the credit available to you
• 15% on the length of your credit history
• 10% on the mix of your credit accounts, including such revolving loan instruments as credit cards and such installment arrangements as mortgages and car loans
• 10% on your new credit applications.

Your FICO score ranges from 300 to 850. The higher the number, the better. Breakdown of credit score ranges vary, but generally:

• 720 to 850: excellent credit
• 690 to 719: good
• 630 to 689: fair
• 580 to 630: poor
• Less than 580: bad credit

Make sure your credit report and score are accurate. Use a website such as annualcreditreport.com or creditkarma.com to obtain your report and look for discrepancies. If you find a problem, immediately contact both the reporting agency and the company portraying the inaccurate information. You likely need more a few calls, letters and emails to update your credit report.

(The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau recently called for changes to make it easier and cheaper for you to access you! r report..)

Monitor your report and check your score at least once a year for both accuracy and potential fraud. If you're a victim of identity theft, enroll in a credit-monitoring service to track your report and send you an alert if changes or suspicious activity occur.

Tips for protecting your report and maintaining a strong score:

• Since how you pay your bills accounts for 35% of your score, pay them on time. Being consistently late or having an account sent to collections definitely hurts your score. This applies not only to credit card accounts but also utilities, retail accounts, installment loans, finance company accounts and mortgages. Note: How recently and how frequently you made late payments matters.

• Ensure that your credit cards carry a low or zero balance. Maxed-out cards translate into a low amount of available credit (meaning lenders think you need to borrow funds to live day to day or you don't track spending closely), and that lowers your score. Closing credit card accounts that have a zero balance and are in good standing doesn't raise your credit score and decreases credit available to you. Understand pros and cons of closing these accounts before cutting up your card.

• Start building your credit now. The longer you display a responsible credit history, the higher your score. If you foresee a problem such as paying a bill late or bouncing a check, give the company or creditor a heads up. You likely establish higher rapport and prevent them from needing to track you down. You may even earn a waiver of any associated fees.

2 Big Stocks Getting Big Attention

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

>>5 Stocks Insiders Love Right Now

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

>>5 Rocket Stocks Worth Buying This Week

These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. That's especially true now that earnings season is officially underway. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

KB Home

Nearest Resistance: $20.50

Nearest Support: $19

Catalyst: Earnings

>>5 Stocks Poised for Breakouts

Shares of small-cap homebuilder KB Home (KBH) are up more than 7% this afternoon, following first-quarter profits that were bigger than analysts expected. The firm saw earnings of 12 cents per share for the first quarter, vs. an average earnings estimate of 8 cents per share. Rising housing prices were the catalyst for the earnings beat at KBH.

KBH gapped up hard this morning, shoving their way back in the uptrending price channel that's been in play since November. While this homebuilder broke down through the bottom of the channel earlier this month, today's move erases that downside. Even though re-entering the trend channel isn't that exciting, it does make higher prices look likely in this stock.

Hot Blue Chip Stocks For 2014

Renren

Nearest Resistance: $7.70

Nearest Support: N/A

Catalyst: Earnings

>>5 Stock Charts Screaming "Buy" in March

On the other side of the spectrum is Renren (REN), the Chinese social media stock. A nasty earnings miss this morning is shoving shares down double digits this afternoon. While raw earnings numbers came in looking good, REN's numbers included the results of a former subsidiary; without them, profits and revenues nosedived for the quarter.

From a technical standpoint, this chart is broken. Renren actually broke down through a key support level on Monday, failing to catch a bid at the $7.70 price tag that had previously been a floor for shares. With no semblance of buying pressure in sight, REN is a name that's best avoided from here.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Douglas A. McIntyre]

And Starbucks will be nagged forever by the fact it was flanked by McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) in the coffee business. Wall Street has not forgotten that one of America’s oldest fast-food companies trumped one of its newest ones using distribution heft, brand and a huge store chain size to stagger Starbucks within the business in which it claimed to be the leader.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

If those traders are right, and food commodity prices are headed much higher, it would be bad news for consumers and for consumer companies such as McDonald's (MCD) and PepsiCo (PEP) that have to pay higher prices.

B/E Aerospace (Nasdaq: BEAV  ) reported earnings on July 23. Here are the numbers you need to know.

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), B/E Aerospace met expectations on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By Victor Selva] able to maintain a competitive position in the market, shows ATS麓s ability for great evolution and profitable growth.

Alliant also benefits from a narrow economic moat. Having long-term contracts with its customers, that generate consistent revenue for years, is a great advantage. The long-term programs have high switching costs for the customer. For example, ATK produced the composite materials for the Hellfire missile for years.

In addition, leading the solid rocket propellant market should ensure increased annual revenue. The new Space Launch System (SLS), for which ATK is working with the NASA, is expected be as successful as the Space Shuttle program years ago.

Most important, Alliant is the biggest supplier of small-caliber ammunition for the U.S. military. Furthermore, ATK has managed to get new contracts in the U.S. military sector, such as the second full-rate production of the advanced anti-radiation guided missiles. This contract with the U.S. Navy was signed for a total of $102.4 million.

New Contracts and acquisitions should increase profitability

Alliant has developed a composite technology that brought in new customers such as Airbus Group NV (EADSY) and Boeing Co (BA). In addition, the company's composite material is required for the production of the F-35 jets. ATK produces around $1.8 million of the content in every F-35 jet that is constructed and generates $1.2 million worth of every A350.

New acquisitions create great expectations for shareholders, and this is the case of Alliant. The acquisition of Bushnell Group Holding Inc., that was completed in November of 2013, will amplify the customer base of Alliant麓s Sporting Group even further, and is projected to increase earnings for the company.

The Department of Defense awarded nine contracts worth a combined $239.5 million Monday. Among public companies, a few of the bigger winners included:

General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) won a $45.2 million award exercising an option on a previously awarded contract. GE will supply the U.S. Navy with seven F414-GE-400 spare engines and multiple engine components for its F/A-18E/F fighter jets. This contract should be complete by November 2015. Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH  ) is a winner in a $30.9 million award under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ), cost-plus-fixed-fee, multiple-award contract "for support of emerging navigation technologies for air and shipboard command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance system applications."The DoD's contract announcement said a second, unnamed contractor has won a similar award, and both awardees will now have to compete for individual task orders the Navy may put up for bid over the next three years. Additionally, this contract may be extended by a two-year option period -- potentially raising the value of the contract to $52.7 million, and potentially extending the contract out to May 5, 2016. B/E Aerospace (NASDAQ: BEAV  ) was awarded an unrelated maximum $6.6 million contract. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

CSX (NYSE: CSX  ) has undergone a huge transformation over the past decade, as the steep spike in energy prices sent railroads from being nearly obsolescent modes of transportation to being a key mover of goods during the commodity boom. Even after that boom paused during the 2008 financial crisis, CSX stock rebounded sharply from its declines and has recently approached all-time-record highs.

The biggest new holdings are Coinstarand Vishay Intertechnology. Other new holdings of interest include the railroad company CSX (NYSE: CSX  ) , which operates more than 21,000 miles of track and is yielding 2.3%. It has been hurt by softness in demand for coal (in part due to low natural gas prices), but coal is likely to remain in demand internationally, and coal exports have been increasing. CSX is geographically well positioned to benefit from such exports, with its access to Eastern and Gulf Coast ports. Its first quarter reflected growth in revenue and earnings.

That inflation rate wasn't a big help for Banco Santander Chile (NYSE: BSAC  ) , the fund's third-largest holding, which is a large bank that's inflation-sensitive and saw its net interest margin drop in its most recent quarter. However, many of the more important underlying fundamentals of Banco Santander Chile, such as loan growth and core deposits, increased year over year while net provision expenses for consumer loans dropped 3.8% year over year.

Is the Market Dependent on the Fed?

The US government is no longer looking for quick fixes for the economy, but concrete solutions, says Jack Ablin, Chief Investment Officer at BMO Private Bank.

TERRY:  I'm Terry Savage from MoneyShow.com talking with Jack Ablin.  He is the chief investment officer of BMO Private Bank, meaning you make money investment decisions for $66 billion.  Is the market dependent just on the fed which is now retreating a bit, or is it depending on things happening out of Washington?  What's your outlook for 2014?

JACK:  Sure.  I think that the government, Washington in particular, has done a nice job throwing fixes at our problems.  We had the cash for clunkers, we've got quantitative easing.  We've done a lot of things to try to him things in but now we're looking for solutions, and solutions that will really address some of the imbalances that we have.

Best Gold Stocks To Watch For 2014

TERRY:  Give us three solutions that could actually change the direction of the economy for the better and help the markets continue to grow.

JACK:  Sure.  One solution, pretty simple, is to reform immigration.  Our H1B Visa program is a way to get qualified workers.  These are graduate students who are working, generally schooled in this country, that aren't allowed to work here.  We're currently capped at 180,000 people a year.  If we even raise that to 200,000 it's enough to move -

TERRY:  Allow smart people in to keep working.  Number two reform.

JACK:  Number two, I think we need to train our work force to meet the needs of the private sector.  The good news is we don't have to rely exclusively on Washington.  We've got these new MOOCs, massively open online courses, that's going to change the overall cost curve for tuition, but it's also really favorably impacting our K through 12 experience.  That's starting, but we do need some help from Washington.

TERRY:  And a third thing you'd like to see out of Washington.

JACK:  The third thing really is just change the corporate tax rate.  The fact is we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world and we're discouraging companies from investing here in this country.

TERRY:  Jack, we're seeing out of Washington inequality, we've got to tax the rich more, we've got to make everyone equal.  You'll never get a change in the corporate tax rate, will you?

JACK:  Well, the funny is thing is, we don't even collect corporate taxes.  Of all the taxes that we collect, 96% of it is personal, so what we're doing is we're spending $200 billion a year hiring attorneys and accounts to figure out ways around the corporate tax code, and then we're sending our profits to other countries.  That's why we don't pay corporate taxes.

TERRY:  We are appreciative of that analysis.  It's one I haven't heard before.  We've been talking about Jack Ablin, chief investment officer of BMO Private Bank.  I'm Terry Savage for MoneyShow.com.
