Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

The largest manufacturer in China, Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) , expects similar trends in the first quarter, with shipments falling 6% to 7% and gross margin between 4% and 4.2%. So, every company follows the same general trends on both the top and bottom lines.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) was also the beneficiary of a $165 million loan agreement with the China Development Bank, which is owned by the Chinese government. This includes a one-year, $110 million loan and a three-year, $55 million loan for working capital needs. Yingli is one of the most indebted companies in the industry, but the government doesn't look like it is willing to let it fail.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

That newfound focus on utility-sized projects has given CSIQ an edge over other solar stocks in the earnings department. For example, PV module only manufacturer Yingli Green Energy (YGE) fell hard when its earnings reported disappointed investors, as sales didn come meet expectations.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Shipment and margin trends aren't usually isolated to one Chinese solar manufacturer so it's easy to assume that other companies will see disappointing numbers in the first quarter. The first two to watch are Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) and Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) , who round out the top three Chinese solar module suppliers with Trina. All three have high debt, low margins, and massive losses.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Cold like coal
Similar trends pushed coal producer Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) down 45%. Coal producers have faced a number of challenges lately. Low natural-gas prices have made coal less desirable as a fuel for power production and other bulk needs, and an adverse regulatory environment in the U.S. has pushed most coal producers to turn to the export markets as their best source of potential demand. Yet as China's economy has slowed, Peabody in particular reaps less benefit from its strategically located reserves in Western Australia. Unless natural gas recovers all of its losses and makes coal more attractive, Peabody could continue to see pressure.

Best Construction Stocks To Invest In 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) Encouraged by a housing rebound lapping its second year, many U.S. homebuilders are loading up on land and entering new markets as they gear up for next year's spring home-selling season and beyond.

The land-buying push comes after several years during which builders hoarded cash and held off from making large land purchases or preparing raw land for new construction as they rode out the housing downturn.

On Thursday, luxury homebuilder Toll Brothers said it agreed to buy the home-building business of privately held Shapell Industries for about $1.6 billion. The deal will give Horsham, Pa.-based Toll a trove of land parcels in wealthy, high-growth markets in California such as metro Los Angeles, Orange County, Carlsbad and the San Francisco Bay area.

Earlier this week, builder Tri Pointe Homes said that it would combine with Weyerhaeuser's home-building business in a deal valued at about $2.7 billion.

SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) made a similar move in late May when it offered $300 million of convertible notes, due 2018. The notes carry a low interest rate of 0.75%, but can be converted into shares of SunPower stock at $24.95 per share if shares trade above that level by then. So, this wasn't a full-share sale like First Solar's announcement, but it's dilutive nonetheless.

In 2011, Khosla took public Amyris (Nasdaq: AMRS), Gevo (Nasdaq: GEVO), and KiOR (Nasdaq: KIOR). Each of these stocks started out trading up from the IPO price, with Amyris gaining more than 90 percent at one point. But the challenges of producing fuels from biomass began to mount, and investors realized that this business is capital-intensive. Enthusiasm for these companies dissipated as they fell short of production expectations. Since their respective IPOs Amyris, Gevo, and KiOR are down 70 percent, 92 percent, and 88 percent.

Solazyme is more than a biofuels play like fellow biofuels upstarts like Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) and Gevo (NASDAQ: GEVO  ) . I purchased shares of Solazyme for the Prosocial Portfolio (I hold shares in my personal portfolio, too) not only for its impressive foray into a nascent field, but also because it had already inked some impressive partnerships. Meanwhile, its alternative oils go much further than simply trying to provide alternatives to fossil fuels. Its microalgae-derived oils can also be used in skin care and food.

The so-called fundamentals, frankly, don't really matter for Entest BioMedical Inc. (OTCMKTS:ENTB) or Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ:GEVO). Oh, both GEVO and ENTB are generating sales, but both are consistently taking losses. That's ok though, as for both companies right now, profits aren't really the point - it's the pipeline that matters.

Top 5 Biotech Stocks To Buy Right Now

Sarepta Therapeutics (NASDAQ: SRPT  ) won't be the only stock choice for a biotech focusing on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or DMD, much longer. Its one potential challenger on the scene, Prosensa, recently announced plans to move forward with an initial public offering. Here are three views on what a Prosensa IPO could mean for Sarepta.

Negative
Prosensa's IPO won't have much impact on the progress of its DMD drug, drisapersen. The Dutch biotech didn't need to raise money to keep development going for the drug. GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK  ) obtained rights to drisapersen back in 2009 and funds the development effort. Similarly, Prosensa doesn't reallyneed to worry about footing the bill for commercialization of the drug, assuming it ultimately gains regulatory approval. Glaxo will also handle the finances there.

A publicly traded Prosensa doesn't threaten Sarepta any more than it would as a privately held company. However, it could possibly have a negative impact on Sarepta's shares. How? Investors could decide to hedge their bets by buying Prosensa shares (when available) rather than buying more Sarepta stock. This would lessen demand for Sarepta to some extent. Weaker demand would serve as a drag on the stock, keeping it from rising as high as it could reach.

When Regulus Therapeutics (NASDAQ: RGLS  ) went public last year, investors weren't the only ones buying the share offering; Regulus' partners and founders clearly thought it was a good investment idea, because they bought more shares. Shares of Agios Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AGIO) got a boost, shooting up 29.08 percent to $40.84 after the company reported quarterly results.

Another stock that insiders are moving into here is Agios Pharmaceuticals (AGIO), which focuses on the development and commercialization of therapeutics in the field of cancer metabolism and inborn errors of metabolism in the U.S. Insiders are buying this stock into major strength, since shares are up big so far in 2014 by 79%.

Agios Pharmaceuticals has a market cap of $1.4 billion and an enterprise value of $1.5 billion. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a price-to-sales of 53.91 and a price-to-book of 11.51. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 48.1%, and for next year it's pegged at 15%. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $162.27 million and its total debt is zero.

A director just bought 2,300 shares, or about $100,000 worth of stock, at $43.98 per share.

From a technical perspective, AGIO is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been selling off after a failed breakout attempt for the last few weeks, with shares moving lower from its high of $50.37 to its intraday low of $42.15 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of AGIO within range of tagging its 50-day moving average of $40.27 a share.

If you're bullish on AGIO, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its 50-day at $40.27 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance at $45 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 419,691 shares. If that breakout starts soon, then AGIO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its all-time high of $50.37 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give AGIO a chance to tag $55 to $60 a share.

Top 10 Safest Stocks To Buy Right Now

While we are approaching the end of another calendar year, there are still some memories of 2012. The biggest fear in 2012 was: the world is coming to an end on 21st December, 2012. Well, it is more than a year – and the world has yet not ended.

At the same time, one may wonder if the world has changed dramatically. Let us look at some of the events that took place in 2013. These events shook our long-held beliefs.

In the beginning of the year, the safest asset – gold, after having a decade long bull run, saw weakness. What happened in April was unbelievable for most – In a sudden move, gold prices (in Indian Rupees) were down more than 20 percent from their peak. Barring a surge in July-August due to the weakness of Indian Rupee against world currencies, Gold has been quite lackluster throughout the year. Before the year began, it was believed to be a safe haven.

The popular belief was that in times of crisis, one rushes to Gold. Well, the safe haven is roughly 17 percent down compared to last year’s price.
