Advisors' Opinion:

    This week's winner
The top dog this week was, again, the star of this deeply discounted value portfolio, Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) . The trucking company soared 18% on the week after announcing that its ABF teamsters had ratified a five-year collective bargaining agreement, and passed a majority of supplements in the ABF National Master Freight Agreement. This news paves the way for Arkansas Best to, once again, be cost-competitive with its peers without having to reduce its workforce. Shares have now more than doubled in just the past two months.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Even the trucking companies that have been struggling are showing signs of life. Just last week, Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) announced a tentative agreement between its ABF Freight Systems subsidiary and the Teamsters union that should dramatically lower costs. Just days later, struggling trucker YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) , which also reported its first quarterly profit in six years recently, confirmed that it's offered a preliminary proposal to acquire Arkansas Best.

Despite what can best be described as asoft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors bejumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?

    This week's winner
After tumbling by double digits last week, trucking company Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) tacked on 14.6% to take the top spot this week. Shares rallied after the company announced a regular $0.03 quarterly cash dividend on Tuesday, payable to shareholders on May 21. Following stronger-than-expected results from many trucking companies, I feel quite confident that once Arkansas Best solves its union issues, it'll be pedal to the metal.

The company has a current ROE of 19.24% which is higher than the one exhibited by PVH Corp. (PVH) and the industry median. In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking at higher levels of ROE, VF Corp. (VFC) and Hanesbrand Inc. (HBI) could be the options. Coach Inc. (COH) and Michael Kors have very good ratios. It is very important to understand this metric before investing and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.
