Friday release of the final supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) for the Keystone XL pipeline really contained no surprises. The U.S. State Department had issued a draft report last March and the version issued on Friday was a tuned-up version of that earlier document, but its conclusions were substantially the same.
The final SEIS concluded that whether or not Keystone XL is built, the impact on extraction in the Canadian oil sands region will not be significantly affected. That conclusion is based on expected oil prices, oil-sands supply costs, transport costs, and supply-demand scenarios examined in the SEIS.
The SEIS also concluded that the pipeline impact on carbon dioxide emissions would be relatively small. U.S. CO2 emissions from burning petroleum totaled about 2.2 billion tons in 2012 and the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that 2013 emissions will reach approximately the same level. According to the final SEIS, lifecycle emissions (i.e., production, refining, and combustion) from the 830,000 barrels of crude a day that would flow through the Keystone XL pipeline would add 147 to 168 million tons annually. That an increase of about 6.7% to 7.6% in carbon emissions from burning petroleum products.

Insurance companies have created an entire industry based upon risk, and except for AIG (NYSE: AIG ) during the financial crisis, it has worked out pretty well. So, it's not a stretch to imagine a large life insurer like Canada's Sun Life Financial (NYSE: SLF ) assuming the pension liability for the Canadian Wheat Board's defined benefit plan in a recent $147 million deal, the first such accord in Canada's history.

Over the next five years growth in the Asian market will likely boost the overall modest premium growth rate, averaging it at 2%, while the total revenue CAGR recovers to 3% after the steep declines reported since 2012. Furthermore, Manulife ROE will continue its current upward trend, increasing from 2013 10.9% to an average 12% by 2018, accompanied by the steadily expanding net margins of 16.8%. While it will take some time for the company growth to accelerate, I feel bullish about management optimism regarding its business shift, and see the dividend yield and returns on equity as solid benefits for a long term investment. Moreover, the firm is currently trading at a 10% price discount relative to the industry average of 14.0x, making it a relatively inexpensive buy.

Joe Raedle/Getty Images TORONTO -- BlackBerry Ltd. will pay its new interim CEO a base salary of $1 million, a bonus of up to twice that amount as well as stock awards potentially worth some $85 million, in the hopes of turning around Canada's most prominent technology company. John Chen, the second consecutive chief executive officer at BlackBerry (BBRY) to receive a bumper package, will have to help the embattled smartphone maker regain its footing and win back market share ceded to the likes of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and a range of devices that run on Google's (GOOG) Android operating system. Chen was credited with turning around Sybase in the late 1990s. Sybase, an enterprise software company, was eventually acquired by SAP (SAP) in 2010. Chen's share awards only begin to vest after he completes three years with BlackBerry, and the majority of the options will vest only after he completes his fifth year, according to a regulatory filing late Thursday. Should Chen be fired without cause, he will be paid up to $6 million, according to the filing. Chen's appointment came after BlackBerry stunned many Monday when it abandoned plans to sell itself and instead opted to raise funds via a $1 billion notes offering led by Fairfax Holdings, its largest shareholder. Fairfax, led by investment guru Prem Watsa, had said it was investing $250 million in the offering. In its filing Thursday, BlackBerry said Canso Investment Counsel is investing $300 million in the offering, while Mackenzie Financial, Markel, Qatar Holding, and Brookfield Asset Management are buying the remainder. As part of the financing deal, BlackBerry has agreed to pay a fee to the investors if it does reach an alternate deal that results in the sale of the company, either before, or within 30 days of the close of this deal. Depending on the circumstances, the fee could range between $135 million and $250 million. The investors have also pledged to a standstill agreement, for a period of on

Salesforce took over the top spot based on revenues in 2012, unseating one of its principal rivals, German-based SAP (NYSE: SAP ) . Of course SAP, along with up-and-coming CRM competitor Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) with its Dynamic CRM, generate considerably more total revenues than Salesforce. SAP's CRM solutions generated 13.3% of its total 2012 revenue, and about 3% for Microsoft's upstart Dynamic CRM. But SAP's year-over-year CRM revenue growth in 2012 was a paltry 0.1% -- shameful compared with Salesforce's 26% jump.

You may have seen commercials for this giant German company before, but maybe you still don't understand what it does. When you stack up Salesforce stock against two of its larger, incumbent rivals in database software -- SAP (NYSE: SAP ) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL ) -- there's plenty of reason to expect the former to outperform the latter. For example, according to the smart folks at finviz.com, who keep track of these kinds of things, Salesforce boasts a better record of sales growth than either of its rivals:

Corbis Providing landline connectivity is a fading business, with more and more folks saving money by disconnecting their home phone plans, relying primarily on smartphones. It's a grim trend that would make this a scary area for shareholders, but good luck trying to tell income-chasing investors to stay away. Despite their dubious growth prospects, Frontier Communications (FTR), CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream (WIN) have been attracting investors based of the strength of their generous quarterly distributions. Frontier and Windstream -- and to a lesser extent CenturyLink -- have tried to go where the big boys won't. They concentrate on smaller markets where traditional phone services are still in demand, and they don't have to compete as hard with the titans of telco. It's an interesting strategy. It has long-term flaws, but the three stocks are still magnetic to investors that put up with the shortcomings in exchange for fat dividend checks every three months. Yield Signs How meaty are the disbursements here? CenturyLink yields 5.9 percent, and it's at the low end of the niche. Windstream is the most generous payer with a hefty 9.9 percent payout. Frontier straddles the two with its 7 percent yield. All three reported quarterly results this week, giving the market some valuable insight on the sustainability of their popular distributions. It's important to remember that these three companies aren't merely selling landlines. You don't stick around if you're only selling buggy whips, Beanie Babies and Milli Vanillii CDs. Frontier, CenturyLink and Windstream are trying to offset the folks canceling their home phone lines and millennials who have no intention of ever having them by selling more relevant broadband connectivity. They also offer businesses a growing array of corporate communication services. For the most part, these efforts haven't been enough to grow the overall business. Frontier kicked off the three days of earnings reports on Tuesday, che

Australians will remember 2013 in part for the fall of some of our national corporate icons. The Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore are unlikely to be produced domestically going forward, and Qantas has unsuccessfully sought subsidies from the Federal government. Due to elevated cost structures and a high exchange rate, Australia Inc. is increasingly unable to compete in a fiercely competitive global market.High on the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Christmas wish-list this year will be a lower exchange rate and a business community more willing to loosen its purse strings in 2014. Unfortunately, the first wish will likely need to be granted before the second can be realized. We expect the RBA will need to keep policy accommodative over the cyclical horizon and 2014 will be a critical transition year for the Australian economy.Over the year through September 2013, real growth in business investment outside the mining sector slowed to almost zero (0.5% to be precise, as shown in Figure 1). Why has Australia Inc. invested so little into its businesses this year? As RBA Deputy Governor Philip Lowe commented in a speech in late October, the lack of business investment in recent years is actually a global phenomenon across the developed world.Although hard to quantify, this nvestment drought,as Lowe described it, has likely been influenced by a lingering risk aversion after the financial crisis as well as the political uncertainty that has been common in many developed countries over the past few years. But in Australia another variable has also been restraining non-mining capital expenditure, and that is the elevated exchange rate.As Figure 1 shows, changes in the real trade-weighted exchange rate have historically led changes in non-mining business investment. As the real exchange rate appreciates, domestic products and services become less competitive relative to foreign goods and services, both at home and abroad. And of course, the reverse is true w

I'm going to sell ENI S.p.A. (E) out of my Dividend Income portfolio today. The dividend portfolio is too energy-heavy for my liking at the moment, given that I think oil prices are likely to be flat to lower in 2014, and given the likelihood of major supply and delivery disruptions this year. ENI—with its exposure to supply problems in Libya, Nigeria, Mozambique, and former (so far at least) Soviet republics such as Kazakhstan, and its exposure on the demand side to the less-than-robustly growing Italian economy—currently offers an unattractive mixture of risk and reward.
