10 Best Penny Stocks For 2014

After watching "The Wolf of Wall Street," the thought of investing through a financial middleman may seem as appealing as diving into the ocean right after seeing "Jaws."

The movie shows an extreme example of brokers gone wild. In doing so, it reveals one reason why low-cost exchange-traded funds are one of the fastest-growing areas of the financial industry. Investors have been using ETFs more and more as a way to bypass as many middlemen as possible, so they can keep more money for themselves.

While the film shows stockbrokers pitching penny stocks, there are many other ways the financial industry bites and nibbles at retail investors’ money. A major example is the $13 trillion mutual fund industry. When a broker sells a mutual fund, they get a cut, albeit one that's far smaller than what the brokers in the movie got for their sales. Mutual funds may also feed Wall Street through commissions by turning over fund portfolios at a rapid rate. Those fees are an additional cost on top of the expense ratio and any loads levied.

While this will be the first auction for wind power in federal lands, it's not the first time offshore wind has made a splash in the United States. For the past few years, the private project Cape Wind has attempted to build 468 MW of wind power in between the Massachusetts mainland and Nantucket island. The U.S. government has also granted a 96,000-acre permit to NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG  ) for its Bluewater wind project off the coast of Delaware. While neither project has started construction yet, both hope to get construction started by the end of this year to take advantage of the federal tax credits for new wind construction that will potentially expire in December.

He added that while the fuel cell industry has developed slowly, this year has been different as e did see a lot more recognition that the kind of things we are doing can really add value, not just economic but also offsetting infrastructure costs.Last September, FuelCell Energy Increported an 81% revenue increase to $53.7 million and a net loss attributable to common shareholders of $6.4 million verses$10.7 million whiletotal cash on the balance sheet increased by $19.7 million thanks to the net proceeds of $35.5 million from the issuance of convertible notes at a conversion price of approximately $1.55 per share during the quarter (Note: Shares closed at $1.35 on Tuesday). However and besides the smaller net loss, what excited shareholders was the announcement ofa co-marketing agreement with NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG) for the marketing and sales of FuelCell Energy Inc power plants. Specifically, NRG will market the power plants to its customer base as well as offer afinancing option utilizing a power purchase agreement.

The launch of these investment vehicles has been a source of excitement in the power industry, particularly with NRG Energy Inc’s (NYSE: NRG) successful initial public offering (IPO) of NRG Yield Inc (NYSE: NYLD), the firm’s YieldCo. That’s prompted a number of utilities to announce similar plans. The question is whether these new securities offer enduring value, similar to what’s happened in the traditional MLP space, or whether they’re just another way for firms to raise cash by making a cynical play for yield-starved income investors.
