If nothing else, you have to admire the bravado. Faced with growing concern about the durability of emerging markets, yesterday Turkey hoisted one of its key interest rates, the benchmark weekly repo rate, from 4.5% to 10%. Where most central banks agonize over whether or not to put up rates by a quarter of a percentage point, Turkey more than doubled, in a bold attempt to tackle inflation and defend its plummeting currency.
Did it work? At first, it appeared to have done so. The Turkish lira rallied 3.6% yesterday morning (the rate rise had come into effect at midnight). But by the end of the day it was pretty much back where it had started. South Africa, in less headline-hogging terms, also raised its own interest rates for the first time in five years, but by a more modest 50 basis points to 5.5%. That didn�� work either: the rand fell 2% yesterday. For the cynical view, look no further than a tweet from Bill Gross, CEO of Pimco, the world�� largest investor in bonds: ��urkey & South Africa flunk currency test ��don�� wait around to see who�� next. We remain Neutral-rated on Sysco, believing that an ongoing challenging economic environment and pressure on gross margin to drive top-line growth (and market share) will limit EBIT growth over at least the next few quarters. The longer-term outlook could be better, as some benefit is derived from ERP, but uncertain. The shares are rising 4% pre-market (vs. a 0.40% increase in the S&P 500), possibly on lower BTS expenses as well as a greater-than-expected CP-funded share buyback. We would remain on the sidelines and expect other names, like Family Dollar (FDO), Kroger (KR), and Five Below (FIVE) to outperform from here.
