Top 10 Performing Stocks To Buy Right Now

Electric utilities have never been the most exciting opportunities in the stock market, but lately, one stock in the group has been underperforming the stock market as a whole, and performing particularly poorly relative to its peers to boot: Consolidated Edison (NYSE: ED  ) . Why?

Three reasons.

Consolidated Edison is average -- at best
When you stack up Consolidated Edison stock up against two of its bigger rivals -- American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP  ) and Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK  ) -- at first glance, ConEd doesn't look all that bad. Its dividend yield, 4%, is smack-dab in the middle between AEP's 3.8% yield and Duke's 4.2%. Similarly, ConEd's free cash flow yield, sandwiched between those of AEP and of Duke, looks pretty average.

ED Free Cash Flow Yield data by YCharts.

Given this, and with ConEd selling for only a 16 P/E, versus higher price-to-earnings ratios at both of its peers, you might start thinking that paying a little less for Consolidated Edison stock's middle-of-the-road dividend is a pretty bright idea.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Sterman]

I took a close look at all of the companies that appeared in the first part of this series, and there were some great companies in the mix. If price were no object, I'd be a huge fan of:

Oceaneering (NYSE: OII), which is prospering form the ongoing trends toward undersea naval warfare and undersea oil drilling. Oceaneering is poised to grow at a sustained double-digit pace, which is something few other defense contractors can say. Cree (Nasdaq: CREE): LED lighting is a revolutionary game-changer, and Cree's heavy emphasis on R&D is leading the charge towards ever-lower prices for these low-energy light sources that also have remarkable longevity compared to regular bulbs. Still, profit margin gains may be tough in a very competitive environment.  Polaris Industries (NYSE: PII): If Winnebago's (NYSE: WGO) recreational vehicles are suitable for retirees, Polaris has become the go-to name for activity-oriented vehicles. Notably, it has a revenue base that is four times larger than Winnebago as well. If S&P wants to position for future demographic trends, then Polaris is a great choice.

I love these companies, but I don't love their stock prices, and I'd prefer to wait for some sort of pullback before singing their praises. That said, there are two investment ideas that hold great appeal on their own. If they get added to the S&P 500, then they are also set up for a timely trade.

    2. Winnebago sales surged last quarter
If the van is a-rockin', investors come a-knockin'. That's the basic premise behind the recent performance of Winnebago (NYSE: WGO  ) , the recreational-vehicle giant that all good nature-loving rural Americans love. The stock rose 3.6% Monday after reporting $247.7 million in quarterly revenue, a 13.5% jump from the same period last year.

Paul Schiraldi/Netflix/APThe second season of "Orange Is the New Black" debuts on Netflix on June 6. Binge viewing is about to get a little more expensive. True to its word, Netflix (NFLX) announced on Friday that the rate for its streaming plan will go up a buck to $8.99. Netflix is freezing rates for current members at $7.99 a month for the next two years. Netflix closed out its latest quarter with more than 35 million domestic subscribers and more than 48 million members worldwide. That's a lot of people with an incentive to stick around, but it's not as if $8.99 a month will scare potential viewers away. Netflix is still one of the best deals in premium video entertainment, and it knows it. 17.5 Channels of Quality Entertainment Letting Netflix go is easy. It's a simple service to cancel. The rub comes in finding cheaper ways to entertain oneself. Forget cable and satellite television. Those tabs can run into the triple digits, and that's with most channels going unwatched. Ratings tracker Nielsen put out a shocking metric last week, reporting that families in this country average only watch 17.5 of the 189 TV channels in their subscription plans. Yes, we're watching just 9 percent of the channels that we pay for. There are other forms of premium entertainment, of course. Time Warner's (TWX) HBO is the largest premium movie channel. It's home to "Game of Thrones," "Girls," "Veep" and a rotating slate of fresh home video releases. Subscribers have access to HBO Go, tapping the channel's vault of classic HBO shows and content for your streaming pleasure. But HBO costs nearly twice as much as Netflix. Oh, and you also need to have an existing cable or satellite television plan. HBO Go is a standalone offering in select foreign markets. Amazon.com (AMZN) has a growing catalog of streaming content that it makes available at no extra cost to members of its Amazon Prime loyalty shopping club. It can no longer be considered Netflix Lite, either, especiall

In Chipotle's earnings report, watch to see how the company responds to news late last month that Jack in the Box (NASDAQ: JACK  ) would close 67 of its Qdoba restaurants, which compete against Chipotle in the Mexican food space. With its having demonstrated its superiority over its burrito rivals, Chipotle is still in a strong position to make the most of the industry's potential well into the future.

BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (NYSE: BPT  ) is also fueling its distributions. The trust's new quarterly payout comes out to $2.4147517 a unit. We're really splitting pennies here, but it's actually a reasonable 4% increase over its earlier rate.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (NYSE: BPT  )
Created in 1989, the property of the BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust consists of an overriding royalty interest of oil and condensate production from BP's Prudhoe Bay oil field located on the North Slope in Alaska. The trust makes quarterly payments to investors of the income after expenses, which can vary each quarter. Over the past year the trust has paid out an average of $2.22 per quarter which would imply a yield of around 9.4%. The key point that investors must understand is that the oil in the field is a finite resource, meaning that it will run out. Under current projections it's expected that the trust will run dry around the year 2029.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (BPT): BPT is the largest conventional oil and gas trust in the U.S. and was originally formed in 1989 by BP (BP).
